Then I remember gratitude…

gratitudeGratitude

Here I am working full-time, taking care of the kids, making dinner, doing laundry, grocery shopping, having family home evening and family prayers, planning the vacations, cleaning the house, etc. As I make dinner yet again after a long day at work I silently complain about my loved one who doesn’t help out around the house.

Then I remember the tools I am learning in support groups. Where is my attitude of gratitude that I have been cultivating? I am thankful for my energy and ability to work hard. I am thankful for my legs and arms that support me as I make this dinner. I am thankful for my eyes that see my adorable children.

As my gratitude list grows my mood lightens and my mind is more at ease. I have more energy and feel more in control of my life. I notice that I am enjoying this task of making a delicious dinner for my family.  I call them in with a smile to help me finish up and set the table. Gratitude helps me to be happy, feel peace and to see things as they really are.

Where is God?

Revelation.

skyI got caught up in worry, anxiety and fear while living with and around my loved ones with addictions. A downward spiral left me feeling these negative emotions continually. This went on for years. I never felt the spirit so I thought that God had left me behind. I believed that God only spoke to special people – like prophets.

I did not realize that I could not feel the spirit while feeling strong negative emotions. Heavenly Father knew that I was not receiving His inspiration so He put things right in front of my face that showed me that He did love me. He gave me a friend that encouraged me to go to 12 step meetings and finally took me with her.

As I began to heal and to feel peace, joy, happiness and serenity in my life I also began to feel the spirit again. I realized that God had never left me, that He was always there and walking beside me. It was the strong negative emotions that had kept me from feeling His gentle promptings.

As time went by and I gained spiritual experience I learned how to recognize inspiration from God. I learned that sometimes He lets me figure things out on my own and learn by experience. I learned to ask questions throughout the day and to trust the thoughts and feelings that come into my mind and to follow guidance quickly. I learned patience and to have peace in my life as I realized God always answers my prayers in His time.

Revelation is a gift from God that I need while I am here on this earth. It is available for everyone. I need to take time each day to be holy so that I can continue to gain spiritual experience and receive revelation. I want to always recognize that God is walking right beside me.

How can I find peace amid chaos?

Peace

peacePeace can be an elusive thing as I live with and around those that have addictions. Chaos and crazy making sometimes seem to be the norm. But, the atonement is powerful and amazing.

I can access peace through the atonement of Jesus Christ despite what is going on around me. Having peace has a lot to do with my attitude. I feel better when I remember to put my trust in God and trust His plan for me. I can enhance that feeling by listening to good music, dancing, listening to conference talks, going to a support meeting, serving someone, going for a long walk, focusing on my own growth and learning, etc.

Peace and joy are treasures in life. As I focus on taking care of me and on the atonement of Jesus Christ, peace permeates my soul.
